> A practical framework for choosing your next marketplace in Australia: audience fit, category demand, margin after fees, operational readiness and risk.

Choose your next marketplace by audience fit first, then margin after all fees, then your operational readiness. The right channel is where shoppers already look for your category, at a price you can sustain, with service standards you can meet from day one. For most Australian retailers that means weighing one large pure marketplace, such as Amazon or eBay, against a retailer-led marketplace whose shoppers match your range.

## Step 1: Start with where your shoppers look

Marketplaces now play a major role in discovery. [29% of Australian shoppers start product discovery on online marketplaces, rising to 32% of Gen Z](https://auspost.com.au/content/dam/auspost_corp/media/documents/australia-post-ecommerce-report-2026-online-marketplaces.pdf), and Millennials make up 37% of marketplace spending (Australia Post, 2026). Each marketplace has its own audience:

- **Families shopping for value:** BIG W Market and Kmart Marketplace. BIG W reports [over 26 million monthly visits](https://portal.woolworthsmarketplus.com.au/) (Woolworths Group, 2026).
- **Everyday and household needs:** Woolworths Everyday Market, which reaches shoppers on [what Woolworths describes as Australia's No. 1 food and grocery website, with over 30 million monthly visits](https://portal.woolworthsmarketplus.com.au/).
- **Home improvement, garden and outdoor:** Bunnings Marketplace, which has [300,000+ SKUs and 600+ sellers](https://links.sgx.com/FileOpen/WES26-022%202026%20Full-year%20results%20briefing%20presentation.ashx?App=Announcement&FileID=902523) (Wesfarmers, 2026).
- **Broad range, search-led buying:** Amazon, which Roy Morgan estimates [reached nearly $7.1 billion in Australian sales in 2025](https://www.roymorgan.com/findings/10158-amazon-temu-and-shein-growth-story-continues-march-2026) (Roy Morgan, 2026).
- **Price-led and clearance:** Temu, eBay and Kogan.
- **Category specialists:** THE ICONIC (fashion), Temple & Webster (furniture and homewares), Baby Bunting (baby), Myer (department store brands), Etsy (handmade and vintage) and Lasoo (local retail).

Do a simple test. Search for your top ten products on each candidate marketplace and note how many comparable products appear, at what prices, and whether they have reviews. Lots of results with healthy prices signals demand. No results can mean an opportunity, or no demand. Saturation with low prices signals a price war.

## Step 2: Check margin after every cost

Calculate contribution margin per order for your top products on each candidate channel: price, minus commission, payment fees, advertising, freight, packaging, expected returns and product cost. Our [marketplace fees comparison](https://ecomchannels.com/insights/australian-marketplace-fees-compared/) lists the published rates. For retailer marketplaces, ask for the commission for your category and the monthly store fee.

Pay attention to price expectations. Roy Morgan warns that [ultra-low price positioning from Temu and Shein is resetting consumers' reference prices](https://www.roymorgan.com/findings/10158-amazon-temu-and-shein-growth-story-continues-march-2026). A channel where your product only sells at a loss isn't worth the traffic.

## Step 3: Match the channel to your operations

Every marketplace has service standards. Ask yourself:

- **Can you meet the dispatch time?** Most marketplaces expect one to two business days. Late dispatch affects visibility and can lead to penalties.
- **Can your stock stay accurate?** Adding a channel without automatic stock sync is the most common cause of oversells.
- **Can you handle the product type?** Bulky goods need freight carriers. Fashion needs size data and has high return rates. Electricals need compliance documents.
- **Can you produce the content?** Each marketplace has its own title, attribute and image rules.

## Step 4: Weigh access, control and risk

Pure marketplaces are open to most sellers but crowded. Retailer marketplaces are curated, so getting approved takes work, but competition on each product is usually lower and the retailer's brand adds trust. As Australia Post puts it, retailer-led marketplaces combine [marketplace reach with the trust, loyalty programs and customer relationships of established retail brands](https://auspost.com.au/business/grow-your-business/business-ideas-blog/marketplace-growth-strategy) (Australia Post, 2026).

Spread your risk too. If more than about half your revenue relies on one marketplace, adding a second, different type of channel makes your business more resilient to fee changes, algorithm changes or account issues.

## Step 5: Launch small, measure, then scale

1. Launch with 20 to 50 proven products that have strong margins after fees.
2. Run for 60 to 90 days and track sessions or impressions, conversion, return rate and margin per order.
3. Expand the range on channels that work; fix or exit those that don't.

Speed of onboarding matters. Mirakl reports sellers on its platforms [complete onboarding in a median of 28 days](https://www.mirakl.com/blogs/brands-sellers/the-marketplace-revolution-key-insights-from-our-2026-seller-report/) (Mirakl, 2026). The quicker your product data is ready, the sooner you start learning.

## How eComChannels helps

- [AI listing optimisation](https://ecomchannels.com/products/ai-listing-optimisation/) cuts the content work of launching a new marketplace. From one master product record, AI already trained on each marketplace's rules drafts compliant titles, attributes and descriptions, and your team approves them. Listing preparation stops being the bottleneck when you want to test Amazon, BIG W, Bunnings or THE ICONIC, so you can start measuring demand sooner.
- [Order management](https://ecomchannels.com/products/order-management/) connects the new channel to your existing stock and order queue, so a trial doesn't create oversell risk or another login to monitor.
- [Finance auto reconciliation](https://ecomchannels.com/products/finance-reconciliation/) matches each channel's settlements to orders and fees, so after 60 to 90 days you know the real margin per channel, not just revenue.

## FAQ

### Should my first marketplace be Amazon or eBay?

It depends on your category and price point. Amazon suits search-led buying, branded products and sellers ready for strict performance targets. eBay suits sellers under $25,000 a year (who sell without final value fees), clearance, parts and collectables. Many retailers run both.

### Is it better to join a retailer marketplace like BIG W or Bunnings?

If your range fits their shoppers, retailer marketplaces can offer trusted traffic and less direct competition. They are curated, so prepare complete product data and evidence that you can dispatch reliably.

### How long should I test a new marketplace?

Allow 60 to 90 days with a focused range. That is long enough to collect reviews, tune listings and advertising, and see reliable conversion and margin data.
