Marketplace account health is the set of performance metrics a marketplace uses to decide whether to keep showing, and keep allowing, your listings. The core metrics are almost always the same: order defects, seller cancellations, late dispatch, valid tracking and customer complaints. Stay well inside the limits and you keep visibility and selling privileges. Breach them and you can lose search placement, pay extra fees or be suspended.

## Why account health matters

Marketplaces protect their own reputation. When a seller ships late or cancels, the shopper blames the marketplace as much as the seller. Retailer marketplaces make this explicit. Kmart, for example, [takes payment for marketplace orders, but sellers are responsible for the product, including listing content, delivery and returns](https://www.kmart.com.au/faq/marketplace/) (Kmart, 2026). A seller who lets customers down damages the host retailer's brand, so the host enforces standards.

Delivery also shapes buying decisions. Australia Post found [73% of shoppers say a good delivery experience makes them more likely to shop online](https://auspost.com.au/content/dam/auspost_corp/media/documents/ecommerce-reports/annual-ecommerce-reports/ecommerce-report-2026.pdf) (Australia Post, 2026). Marketplaces reward sellers who deliver that experience.

## Amazon's core metrics

For seller-fulfilled orders, Amazon's [Order Performance policy](https://sellercentral.amazon.com.au/help/hub/reference/external/GGJVNFDXQT8C3RA8?locale=en-AU) sets these targets (Amazon, 2026):

| Metric | What it measures | Target |
|---|---|---|
| Order Defect Rate | Orders with negative feedback, an A-to-z claim or a chargeback, over 60 days | Under 1% |
| Cancellation Rate | Seller-cancelled orders, over 7 days | Under 2.5% |
| Late Shipment Rate | Shipments confirmed after the expected ship date, over 10 or 30 days | Under 4% |
| Valid Tracking Rate | Shipments with valid tracking, over 30 days | Above 95% |
| On-Time Delivery Rate | Shipments delivered by the estimated date | Above 97% (recommended) |

Amazon states that an [Order Defect Rate above 1% may result in restriction of your selling privileges, including suspension of seller-fulfilled offers](https://sellercentral.amazon.com.au/help/hub/reference/external/G200285170?locale=en-AU) (Amazon, 2026). On-Time Delivery has no direct penalty, but Amazon uses it to decide which transit times you can promise, and faster promises can improve conversion.

## eBay's seller standards

eBay evaluates sellers on the 20th of each month. Its [minimum standards](https://www.ebay.com.au/sellercentre/seller-performance) allow no more than 2 cases closed without seller resolution (or 0.3% of transactions) and no more than 2% of transactions with defects (eBay, 2026). A defect includes [a seller cancelling an order because it was out of stock or already sold to someone else](https://www.ebay.com.au/help/policies/selling-policies/seller-standards-policy?id=4347).

The consequences of falling to Below Standard are concrete. Your items may be placed lower in Best Match search results, selling limits can be reduced, you lose access to Promoted Listings, and you pay an [extra 5.5% fee on sales, rising to 6.6% after four consecutive months](https://www.ebay.com.au/help/selling/fees-credits-invoices/ebay-stores-selling-fees-managed-payments-sellers?id=4809) (eBay, 2026). Top Rated status requires a [transaction defect rate of no more than 0.5% and a late shipment rate of no more than 5%](https://www.ebay.com.au/help/policies/selling-policies/seller-standards-policy?id=4347).

## Retailer marketplaces

BIG W Market, Everyday Market, Bunnings, Kmart, Myer and THE ICONIC set their own service levels in their seller agreements. They typically cover order acceptance time, dispatch within a set handling time, valid tracking, response time to customer messages, cancellation rates and return handling. These are curated programs, so poor performance can mean losing placement or your seat on the platform. Read your seller agreement and set internal targets well inside each limit. See our guides to [Woolworths MarketPlus](https://ecomchannels.com/insights/woolworths-marketplus-big-w-market-explained/) and [Bunnings and Kmart](https://ecomchannels.com/insights/selling-on-bunnings-and-kmart-marketplaces/).

## What causes most problems

- **Overselling.** Stock that is out of sync across channels leads straight to seller cancellations. This is the most common account health issue for multichannel sellers. See [how to avoid overselling](https://ecomchannels.com/insights/avoid-overselling-across-multiple-channels/).
- **Late dispatch confirmation.** The parcel left on time, but tracking was uploaded late, so the order counts as late.
- **Invalid tracking.** Mistyped or wrong-carrier tracking numbers count against Valid Tracking Rate.
- **"Not as described" complaints.** Inaccurate titles, missing specifications or misleading images lead to returns, negative feedback and claims.
- **Slow responses.** Unanswered messages escalate into claims.

## A weekly account health routine

1. Check each marketplace's performance dashboard weekly, and daily during peaks.
2. Track your own leading indicators: orders not dispatched by the cut-off, orders without tracking, oversell cancellations.
3. Fix root causes, not single incidents: sync stock, automate tracking, correct listing data.
4. Respond to feedback and claims quickly and within each marketplace's rules. Never pressure buyers to change feedback.
5. Keep buffers inside the limits. If the limit is 2.5%, aim for under 1%.

## Key figures

- Amazon: [Order Defect Rate under 1%; Cancellation Rate under 2.5%; Late Shipment Rate under 4%; Valid Tracking Rate above 95%](https://sellercentral.amazon.com.au/help/hub/reference/external/GGJVNFDXQT8C3RA8?locale=en-AU) (Amazon, 2026).
- eBay: [no more than 2% of transactions with defects](https://www.ebay.com.au/sellercentre/seller-performance) (eBay, 2026).
- eBay Below Standard sellers pay an [extra 5.5% fee on sales](https://www.ebay.com.au/help/selling/fees-credits-invoices/ebay-stores-selling-fees-managed-payments-sellers?id=4809) (eBay, 2026).
- [73% of Australian shoppers say a good delivery experience makes them more likely to shop online](https://auspost.com.au/content/dam/auspost_corp/media/documents/ecommerce-reports/annual-ecommerce-reports/ecommerce-report-2026.pdf) (Australia Post, 2026).

## How eComChannels helps

- [AI auto shipping](https://ecomchannels.com/products/ai-shipping/) creates labels and manifests for Australia Post, StarTrack, CouriersPlease and Allied Express and sends valid tracking back to each marketplace automatically. That protects Late Shipment and Valid Tracking rates and removes the manual uploads where errors creep in. It also helps manage carrier claims.
- [Order management](https://ecomchannels.com/products/order-management/) syncs stock across every connected channel, which prevents the oversells behind most seller cancellations. It also gives your team one dispatch queue, so no marketplace's orders are missed.
- [AI listing optimisation](https://ecomchannels.com/products/ai-listing-optimisation/) keeps product data accurate and complete on every channel, with a person approving each change. That reduces the "not as described" returns and negative feedback that feed into defect rates.

Healthy accounts keep their search visibility and selling privileges, and avoid penalty fees. [Book a demo or start a 30-day free trial](https://ecomchannels.com/book-a-demo/).

## FAQ

### What is a good Order Defect Rate on Amazon?

Amazon's requirement is under 1%. Well-run sellers aim far lower, because a handful of claims on a low-volume account can push the rate over the limit quickly.

### Does late dispatch affect my visibility?

Yes, on most marketplaces. eBay may place Below Standard sellers lower in search results, and Amazon uses delivery performance to decide what delivery promises you can show, which affects conversion.

### Can a marketplace suspend my account for poor metrics?

Yes. Amazon says breaching its targets can lead to loss or restriction of selling privileges, and retailer marketplaces can remove sellers who don't meet their service levels.
