> How Amazon, eBay and Bunnings measure late dispatch, what happens when sellers miss targets, and practical steps to keep your late shipment rate low.

Marketplaces measure whether you dispatch on time, and sellers who miss their targets can lose search visibility, pay higher fees or have listings restricted. Amazon expects a late shipment rate under 4%, eBay uses late shipments to decide Top Rated status and search placement, and other marketplaces such as Bunnings expect dispatch within set business days. The fix is realistic handling times, same-day processing and tracking that is uploaded automatically.

## What "late" means on each marketplace

Each marketplace defines lateness slightly differently, which is why sellers on several channels get caught out.

**Amazon.** Amazon's [late shipment rate (LSR)](https://sellercentral.amazon.com.au/help/hub/reference/external/G200285190) counts seller-fulfilled orders whose shipment is confirmed after the expected ship date, measured over both 10-day and 30-day periods. Orders should ship within one to two days unless you have set a different handling time. Expected ship dates are adjusted for national holidays but not for state or territory holidays, so your handling-time settings need to allow for those.

**eBay.** eBay's [seller standards](https://www.ebay.com.au/help/policies/selling-policies/seller-standards-policy?id=4347) count an item as late when the delivery scan is after the latest estimated delivery date and there is no carrier scan within your handling time. Without tracking, eBay asks the buyer whether the item arrived on time.

**Bunnings Marketplace.** According to ChannelEngine's [Bunnings marketplace guide](https://support.channelengine.com/hc/en-us/articles/14858406321437-Bunnings-marketplace-guide), sellers are expected to dispatch orders within two business days of order confirmation, keep cancellations below 2%, and map their carrier to Bunnings' supported list so tracking updates the buyer.

Other Australian marketplaces, including Kogan, Woolworths MarketPlus and Myer, set their own dispatch and tracking expectations. Check each seller agreement and help centre rather than assuming one channel's rule applies everywhere.

## The penalties

**Amazon** states that sellers must keep LSR under 4%, and that an LSR above 4% [can result in loss or restriction of selling privileges](https://sellercentral.amazon.com.au/help/hub/reference/external/GGJVNFDXQT8C3RA8). Related targets include an order defect rate under 1%, a pre-fulfilment cancellation rate under 2.5%, and a valid tracking rate above 95%. Amazon also recommends an on-time delivery rate above 97%; missing it has no direct penalty, but Amazon uses it to decide which transit times you can promise, which affects conversion.

**eBay** says a high late shipment rate on its own will not make an account Below Standard, but a low rate is required for Top Rated status: no more than 5 late shipments or 5% of transactions. If an account does fall to Below Standard on its other metrics, eBay says items may be placed lower in Best Match search, sellers lose access to Promoted Listings, and an extra fee of 5.5% (incl. GST) of the sale applies, rising to 6.6% after four or more consecutive Below Standard months.

Beyond the formal metrics, late dispatch causes buyer messages, negative feedback and claims, which feed into defect rates. Amazon notes that [tracked orders have 60 per cent fewer order defects](https://sellercentral.amazon.com.au/help/hub/reference/external/G200847280).

## Why sellers ship late

Late shipments are rarely about carriers. The usual causes are internal:

- orders sitting in separate seller portals that nobody checks until late in the day
- stock shown as available on a marketplace when it has already sold elsewhere
- handling times set too short, or not adjusted for state public holidays
- shipment confirmation and tracking entered manually, hours after the parcel left
- peak volumes that outrun packing capacity

Note that on Amazon, LSR depends on when you *confirm* shipment, not when the courier collects. A parcel packed on time but confirmed late still counts as late.

## How to keep late shipments low

1. **Set handling times you can meet every day,** including Mondays after a weekend and around state holidays.
2. **Bring all orders into one queue** so marketplace orders are picked alongside webstore orders, oldest due date first.
3. **Sync stock across channels** to avoid selling items you cannot ship, which drives cancellations.
4. **Confirm shipment and upload tracking automatically** as labels are created.
5. **Use carrier scans.** eBay [adjusts your late shipment rate](https://www.ebay.com.au/help/policies/selling-policies/seller-protections?id=4345) when the carrier scan shows you sent the item within your handling time, even if it arrives late. That protection only works if tracking is uploaded.
6. **Plan peak capacity.** Shoppers expect more during sales: Australia Post [reports](https://auspost.com.au/business/grow-your-business/trends-insights) that half would switch retailers to get faster delivery in sales periods. ## Key figures

- Amazon requires LSR under 4%, order defect rate under 1% and valid tracking rate above 95% ([Amazon Seller Central Australia, 2026](https://sellercentral.amazon.com.au/help/hub/reference/external/GGJVNFDXQT8C3RA8)).
- Tracked Amazon orders have 60% fewer order defects ([Amazon Seller Central Australia, 2026](https://sellercentral.amazon.com.au/help/hub/reference/external/G200847280)).
- eBay Top Rated sellers must have no more than 5 late shipments or 5% of transactions ([eBay Australia, 2026](https://www.ebay.com.au/help/policies/selling-policies/seller-standards-policy?id=4347)).
- Below Standard eBay sellers pay an extra 5.5% fee, rising to 6.6% after four consecutive months ([eBay Australia, 2026](https://www.ebay.com.au/help/policies/selling-policies/seller-standards-policy?id=4347)).
- Bunnings Marketplace sellers are expected to dispatch within two business days ([ChannelEngine, 2026](https://support.channelengine.com/hc/en-us/articles/14858406321437-Bunnings-marketplace-guide)).

## How eComChannels helps

[Order management](https://ecomchannels.com/products/order-management/) pulls orders from Amazon, eBay, Bunnings, Kogan, Woolworths MarketPlus, Myer and the other channels you sell on into one dispatch queue, sorted by due date, with stock synced across every channel to prevent overselling and cancellations. [AI auto shipping](https://ecomchannels.com/products/ai-shipping/) then creates the label with Australia Post, StarTrack, CouriersPlease or Allied Express, lodges the manifest and sends the tracking number back to the marketplace automatically, so shipment confirmation happens when the parcel is packed rather than hours later. That protects late shipment, valid tracking and cancellation metrics, which in turn protects search visibility and keeps fees down.

## FAQ

### What is a good late shipment rate?

Aim for well under 1%. Amazon's limit is 4% and eBay's Top Rated threshold is 5%, but sellers near those limits are one busy week away from problems.

### Does a late delivery by the courier count against me?

On eBay, not if tracking shows a carrier scan within your handling time. On Amazon, LSR is based on when you confirm shipment, while late delivery affects the separate on-time delivery rate.

### How do I recover from a high late shipment rate on Amazon?

Amazon suggests taking its account health quiz when available, and if seller-fulfilled offers are deactivated you can appeal through the Account Health page with a plan of action.
