> How to measure marketplace listing performance with impressions, click-through rate and conversion, diagnose the weak step and decide what to fix first.

Listing performance is best measured as a funnel: impressions (how often the listing appears in search), click-through rate (the share of impressions that become clicks or sessions), conversion rate (the share of sessions that become orders) and, after the sale, returns. Each stage points to a different fix. Low impressions mean a relevance or data problem, low CTR means the title, main image or price is not winning the click, and low conversion means the listing is not answering buyers' questions.

## The listing funnel and what each metric means

| Stage | Metric | Typical cause when weak | Where to look |
|---|---|---|---|
| Found | Impressions, search rank | Missing keywords or attributes, wrong category, out of stock | Search term reports, attribute completeness |
| Clicked | Click-through rate (clicks ÷ impressions) | Weak main image, unclear title, uncompetitive price, few reviews | Search results page vs competitors |
| Bought | Conversion rate (orders or units ÷ sessions) | Missing info, poor bullets, few images, delivery promise | Detail page, questions, reviews |
| Kept | Return rate, "not as described" share | Inaccurate or incomplete information | Return reasons, reviews |

Amazon's own guidance defines its unit session percentage as the [percentage of sessions resulting in units sold](https://sellercentral.amazon.co.za/welcome/learn/seller-blog/how-to-improve-amazon-listings), and lists click-through rate and conversion rate among the performance signals that influence ranking (Amazon, 2025). Because ranking depends partly on CTR and conversion, improving those also feeds back into impressions. See [how marketplace search ranking works](https://ecomchannels.com/insights/how-marketplace-search-ranking-works/).

## Where to get the data

- **Amazon.** Business Reports show sessions, page views and unit session percentage by ASIN. Brand-registered sellers can use Brand Analytics, whose Search Query Performance dashboard lets you [look at query volume, impressions, clicks, cart adds and purchases](https://sell.amazon.com/tools/amazon-brand-analytics) for the keywords customers use to find your brand (Amazon).
- **eBay.** Seller Hub reports show listing impressions, click-through rate, page views and sales conversion.
- **TikTok Shop.** Seller Center analytics show product card search data, and its title optimisation tool lets sellers [track additional impressions and GMV](https://seller-us.tiktok.com/university/essay?knowledge_id=1664446336747310&lang=en) after adopting recommended keywords (TikTok Shop, 2026).
- **Other marketplaces.** Kogan, Bunnings Marketplace, Woolworths Everyday Market and other marketplaces vary in what they share; at minimum, track orders, returns and listing errors per SKU.
- **Your own store.** Shopify and WooCommerce analytics give sessions and conversion by product.

## What "good" looks like

Benchmarks are rough because they vary by category, price and device. Shopify, citing Statista, reports that [1.6% of global ecommerce visits converted into purchases in Q3 2025](https://www.shopify.com/blog/retail-conversion-rate), while other benchmark reports place the average closer to 2.9% (Shopify, 2026). Shopify also notes that higher price points and longer consideration cycles mean lower conversion rates, which is normal rather than a problem.

The more useful benchmark is your own: the same SKU before and after a change, or similar SKUs in the same category. Also remember that shoppers browse beyond the first page; Salsify found [41% will scroll up to page three](https://www.salsify.com/press-release-salsify-2025-consumer-research-report) (Salsify, 2025), so impressions on lower pages still count.

## Diagnosing and fixing the weak step

1. **Segment first.** Look at performance by SKU and channel, not catalogue averages. A handful of high-traffic listings usually matter most.
2. **Find the biggest drop.** Compare each listing's impressions, CTR and conversion with similar listings.
3. **Low impressions:** check required attributes, category, title keywords, barcodes and stock status.
4. **Low CTR:** test the main image, the first 70 characters of the title and price competitiveness. See [product titles that convert](https://ecomchannels.com/insights/marketplace-product-titles-that-convert/).
5. **Low conversion:** add missing specs, clarify bullets, add images that answer common questions, and check the delivery promise.
6. **High returns:** fix the information that misled buyers.
7. **Change one thing at a time** and allow enough sessions to compare fairly.

## Measuring AI listing changes

If you use AI to rewrite listings, measure it like any other change. McKinsey's 2025 survey found that tracking well-defined KPIs was the adoption practice with [the most impact on bottom-line results from gen AI](https://www.mckinsey.com/capabilities/quantumblack/our-insights/the-state-of-ai-how-organizations-are-rewiring-to-capture-value), yet fewer than one in five organisations were doing it (McKinsey, 2025). Record what changed, when, and on which SKUs, then compare against unchanged control listings.

## Key figures

- [1.6% of global ecommerce visits](https://www.shopify.com/blog/retail-conversion-rate) converted into purchases in Q3 2025, per Statista data cited by Shopify (Shopify, 2026).
- Amazon lists [CTR and conversion rate](https://sellercentral.amazon.co.za/welcome/learn/seller-blog/how-to-improve-amazon-listings) among the performance signals behind organic ranking (Amazon, 2025).
- Fewer than one in five organisations [track KPIs for gen AI solutions](https://www.mckinsey.com/capabilities/quantumblack/our-insights/the-state-of-ai-how-organizations-are-rewiring-to-capture-value), the practice most linked to bottom-line impact (McKinsey, 2025).
- [41% of shoppers](https://www.salsify.com/press-release-salsify-2025-consumer-research-report) will scroll up to page three of results (Salsify, 2025).

## How eComChannels helps

[eComChannels AI listing optimisation](https://ecomchannels.com/products/ai-listing-optimisation/) connects listing changes to results. It records what was changed on each SKU and channel, and when, so you can compare impressions, click-through, conversion and returns before and after. Listings with complete data but weak conversion are flagged for content improvements; listings with low visibility are checked for missing attributes and keywords. The AI drafts fixes using its training on each marketplace's rules, your team approves them, and bulk updates roll proven changes out across similar products.

When the problem is the click, [AI graphics](https://ecomchannels.com/products/ai-graphics/) generates alternative compliant main images and infographics to test. And because orders and returns flow through [eComChannels order management](https://ecomchannels.com/products/order-management/), sales and return reasons sit alongside the listing data, so you can see which changes lifted sales and which reduced returns without stitching reports together by hand.

## FAQ

### What is a good click-through rate for a marketplace listing?

There is no single benchmark; it depends on category, position and price. Compare your CTR with similar listings in your own catalogue and track the trend after each change.

### How long should I run a listing test?

Long enough to collect a meaningful number of sessions on both versions, and over comparable periods. Avoid comparing a sale week with a normal week.

### Which metric should I fix first?

The stage with the biggest drop relative to similar listings. There is little point improving conversion on a listing nobody sees, or chasing impressions for a listing that does not convert.
