> How Australian online retailers can cut shipping costs with automation: right-sized parcels, smarter carrier choice, fewer surcharges and less manual work.

Shipping automation cuts costs in two ways: it lowers what you pay carriers by choosing the right service and packaging for each parcel, and it lowers what you spend on labour by removing manual booking, label printing and tracking entry. For most Australian online retailers the biggest savings come from accurate weights and dimensions, using more than one carrier, avoiding surcharges, and making sure every dollar of carrier charges and claims is checked.

## Where shipping money goes

Delivery is a large and rising share of the cost of an online order, and shoppers are sensitive to passing it on. ShipStation research reported by [Power Retail](https://powerretail.com.au/shoppers-favouring-cheaper-delivery-over-speed/) found 63% of Australian shoppers would abandon a purchase if shipping fees were too high, while 88% of retailers said selling online has become more challenging. Carriers also review prices regularly; Australia Post and StarTrack, for example, announced [business price changes effective 1 July 2026](https://auspost.com.au/business/shipping/postage-costs/business-pricing-updates).

Most of the carrier's own cost sits at the end of the journey. McKinsey's [2024 analysis](https://www.mckinsey.com/de/publikationen/2024-10-28-ooh-delivery) found the last mile generates 60 to 70% of overall parcel delivery costs in a home delivery network. That is why carriers price heavily on size, destination and handling, and why small decisions on packaging and service add up.

## 1. Get weights and dimensions right

Carriers charge on the greater of dead weight and cubic weight. Australia Post uses a [cubic conversion factor of 250kg per cubic metre](https://auspost.com.au/business/grow-your-business/business-ideas-blog/what-is-cubic-weight), so a 50 x 30 x 40cm carton is charged as 15kg even if it weighs 3kg. If your system books the wrong carton size, you either overpay or receive adjustment charges later.

Store packed dimensions and weights for every SKU and common combination, and let the shipping system choose the carton. Grant Thornton and Power Retail's [2025 report](https://www.grantthornton.com.au/globalassets/1.-member-firms/australian-website/industry/retail/pdfs/gtal_2025_grant_thornton_power_retail_report.pdf) points to reducing empty space in packaging as a way to cut delivery costs.

## 2. Stay inside handling limits

Surcharges for oversize and awkward items are often avoidable. StarTrack applies a [$15 (excluding GST) Manual Handling Surcharge](https://auspost.com.au/business/shipping/parcels/startrack/pricing-updates) to Premium items over 105 x 60 x 60cm or 22kg, and Road Express items over 117 x 60 x 60cm or 20kg, plus separate oversize charges from $25 for items with any dimension from 150cm. Automated rules that flag items near these limits, or route them to a carrier built for larger freight, prevent surprise charges. Our guide to [shipping bulky items](https://ecomchannels.com/insights/shipping-bulky-heavy-items-australia-guide/) covers this in detail.

## 3. Use the right carrier and service for each order

No single carrier is cheapest for every parcel, postcode and speed. Comparing services per order, under rules you control, usually beats a single default. Typical rules include:

- satchels and small parcels to the lowest-cost reliable service for that zone
- heavy or long cartons to a freight service
- express only when the customer paid for it or a marketplace promise requires it
- a backup carrier when a network is congested at peak

Volume matters as well. Australia Post suggests [MyPost Business for fewer than about 170 parcels a month](https://auspost.com.au/business/grow-your-business/business-ideas-blog/mypost-business-vs-eparcel-contract) and an eParcel Contract with tailored pricing above roughly 2,000 parcels a year. Consolidating volume in one system makes it easier to qualify for better contract tiers and to negotiate with evidence.

## 4. Remove manual handling time

Every order that someone has to copy into a carrier portal, print a label for, and then paste a tracking number back into a marketplace costs time and creates room for error. Automating label creation, manifests and tracking upload reduces that labour and cuts mistakes such as wrong addresses or missing tracking, both of which lead to re-delivery costs and marketplace penalties.

Faster processing can reduce freight spend too. In a case study published by [Shippit](https://www.shippit.com/delivered-newsletter/fast-delivery-won-peak), retailer Rolla's reduced freight costs by 10% after automating much of its ship-from-store process and speeding up pick-and-pack. Results vary by business, but the principle holds: fewer manual steps mean fewer expensive exceptions.

## 5. Audit invoices and claim what you are owed

Carrier invoices include fuel levies, surcharges and adjustments that are easy to miss. Match invoiced charges to the consignments you booked and flag differences. Lodge claims for lost or damaged parcels promptly and track them to payment. Unclaimed losses are a hidden shipping cost.

## How eComChannels helps

[AI auto shipping](https://ecomchannels.com/products/ai-shipping/) connects Australia Post, StarTrack, CouriersPlease and Allied Express and applies your rules to every order: it uses stored weights and dimensions to choose a carrier and service, creates labels and manifests automatically, writes tracking back to each marketplace and your webstore, and keeps claims for lost or damaged parcels in one place. [Order management](https://ecomchannels.com/products/order-management/) feeds it orders from every channel so nothing is booked twice or missed. [Finance auto reconciliation](https://ecomchannels.com/products/finance-reconciliation/) matches marketplace settlements to orders, including shipping fees and refunds, so you can see your true delivery cost by channel. Together they reduce both the freight bill and the hours your team spends on it.

## FAQ

### What is the fastest way to reduce shipping costs?

Check that every product has accurate packed weights and dimensions, then compare services by parcel size and destination across more than one carrier. Wrong dimensions and a single default service are the most common sources of overpayment.

### Does multi-carrier shipping cost more to manage?

Only if it is manual. With labels, manifests and tracking automated, adding a carrier adds little admin while giving you more price and service options.

### Should I pass shipping costs on to customers?

Partly, in most cases. Many shoppers abandon carts when fees are high, so common approaches are free standard shipping above a threshold, paid express, and building some delivery cost into product prices.
