# Why Multichannel Sellers Grow Faster, and What It Takes

> Sellers on two or more marketplaces reach more shoppers and earn more. Here is what the data shows, why it happens and how to expand without adding overhead.

Multichannel sellers grow faster mainly because they show up in more places where shoppers already search. Australian shoppers now spread their spending across many brands, apps and marketplaces. Each well-run extra channel adds new customers rather than splitting the existing ones. The catch is operational: growth only comes through if stock, listings, dispatch and payouts are run from one place.

## What the data shows

The clearest dataset comes from Mirakl, which analysed more than 100,000 sellers on its marketplace platforms. [Sellers on just one marketplace averaged $575,093 in GMV, while those on two or more averaged $10,073,917, a 17.5x difference](https://www.mirakl.com/blogs/brands-sellers/the-marketplace-revolution-key-insights-from-our-2026-seller-report/) (Mirakl, 2026). The same report found that 34% of sellers now operate on two or more marketplaces.

Treat that multiplier with care. It is a correlation, and larger, better-resourced brands are more likely to expand in the first place. Adding a second marketplace will not multiply a small seller's revenue 17 times. The direction is still consistent: sellers who build the capability to run several channels tend to be the ones who scale.

## Why it works: shoppers already shop across channels

Australian shoppers are less loyal to any one store than they were. Households now [buy from an average of 16 different brands a year and make four more online purchases than the year before](https://auspost.com.au/business/grow-your-business/business-ideas-blog/ecommerce-trends), while the average basket has shrunk to $96 (Australia Post, 2026). Shoppers buy more often, in smaller amounts, from more places.

Marketplaces are a large share of where that discovery happens. [29% of shoppers start product discovery on online marketplaces](https://auspost.com.au/content/dam/auspost_corp/media/documents/australia-post-ecommerce-report-2026-online-marketplaces.pdf), and 73% of online shoppers bought on one in 2025 (Australia Post, 2026). Each marketplace also has its own loyal audience. A Bunnings shopper looking for garden furniture may never search Amazon for it, and an Everyday Rewards member may never browse eBay.

Australia Post sums up the logic: marketplaces help shoppers [discover your products and introduce your brand to new audiences, while your website is where you tell your story and drive repeat purchases](https://auspost.com.au/business/grow-your-business/business-ideas-blog/marketplace-growth-strategy) (Australia Post, 2026).

## Channels reinforce each other

The fear that marketplaces cannibalise your own store is understandable, but the evidence points the other way. Myer reported that [almost 80% of its marketplace shoppers also bought other Myer items in the past 12 months](https://www.ragtrader.com.au/news/myer-invests-after-41-boom-in-marketplace-sales) (Ragtrader, 2025). That is a retailer's view of its own marketplace, but the principle holds for brands. A customer who first finds you on a marketplace is a candidate for your storefront later.

Multichannel selling also spreads risk. If one marketplace changes its fees, its search algorithm or its strategy, a seller with several channels loses a share of revenue, not the whole business.

## The cost: complexity grows with each channel

Each channel adds work:

- **Stock.** Every channel shows an available quantity. If those numbers drift, you oversell, cancel orders and damage your seller rating. Inventory distortion, the combined cost of out-of-stocks and overstocks, is estimated at [$1.73 trillion a year, or 6.5% of global retail sales](https://www.ihlservices.com/news/analyst-corner/2025/09/retail-inventory-crisis-persists-despite-172-billion-in-improvements/) (IHL Group, 2025). Our guide to [avoiding overselling across channels](https://ecomchannels.com/insights/avoid-overselling-across-multiple-channels/) covers the fixes.
- **Listings.** Titles, attributes, categories and images must meet each marketplace's rules, and a single product can need several versions.
- **Orders and dispatch.** Separate seller portals mean separate queues, different dispatch deadlines and separate tracking uploads.
- **Money.** Each marketplace settles on its own schedule with its own fee deductions, so matching payouts to orders gets harder with every channel you add.

Mirakl's data points to automation as what separates the sellers who scale. Sellers using its AI catalogue tool, which maps attributes and standardises listings across marketplaces, [generated 88% higher GMV than those who did not](https://www.mirakl.com/blogs/brands-sellers/the-marketplace-revolution-key-insights-from-our-2026-seller-report/) (Mirakl, 2026). This is a vendor's own figure about its own tool, but it shows how much catalogue work holds sellers back.

## A practical expansion sequence

1. **Centralise first.** Get products, stock and orders into one system before adding a channel.
2. **Pick channels by audience.** Match your category to where its buyers already shop. See our guide to [choosing your next marketplace](https://ecomchannels.com/insights/choosing-your-next-marketplace-australia/).
3. **Launch with a focused range.** Start with proven sellers that have healthy margins after fees, then broaden.
4. **Watch account health from day one.** New sellers get the least leeway on late dispatch and cancellations.
5. **Reconcile per channel.** Measure profit by channel after fees, freight and returns, not just revenue.

## How eComChannels helps

eComChannels is built so a small team can run many channels without the extra work growing at the same rate.

- [Order management](https://ecomchannels.com/products/order-management/) brings orders from Amazon, eBay, Temu, BIG W Market, Woolworths Everyday Market, Bunnings, Kmart, Myer, THE ICONIC, Kogan, Etsy, Shopify, WooCommerce and more into one queue, and keeps stock in sync across all of them. Adding a channel no longer means adding a spreadsheet.
- [AI listing optimisation](https://ecomchannels.com/products/ai-listing-optimisation/) keeps one master product record and drafts channel-specific listings with AI already trained on each marketplace's rules. A person approves each draft, and bulk updates push changes everywhere at once. More products go live correctly on more marketplaces, which increases exposure and the number of searches you can appear in.
- [Finance auto reconciliation](https://ecomchannels.com/products/finance-reconciliation/) matches each marketplace's settlements to the underlying orders and fee rules, and flags short-paid or missing payouts, so you can see which channels make money.

## FAQ

### What is the difference between multichannel and omnichannel?

Multichannel means selling through several channels, such as your website and multiple marketplaces. Omnichannel goes further and connects those channels so the customer experience, stock and data are consistent across them. Most growing online retailers start multichannel and move toward omnichannel as their systems connect.

### How many channels should a small business sell on?

Most small businesses do well with their own storefront plus two or three marketplaces that suit their category. Expand further once stock sync, listings and dispatch run reliably from one system.

### Will selling on marketplaces hurt my own website sales?

Not necessarily. Marketplaces mostly reach shoppers who were not visiting your site. Use them to find new customers, and use your own store for loyalty, brand storytelling and better margins.
