AI is most useful in e-commerce finance where the work is high-volume, rule-based and data-heavy: matching marketplace payouts to orders, checking fees against rules, spotting unusual transactions, categorising expenses and explaining variances. It is least reliable when asked to do complex calculations or make judgement calls without oversight. The practical approach for retailers is to automate matching and checking, let AI flag and explain exceptions, and keep a person approving anything that changes the books.
Where finance teams are using AI
Adoption has moved from experiments to routine use in many finance teams. Gartner found 58% of finance functions were using AI in 2024, up 21 percentage points on 2023, with the most common uses being intelligent process automation (44%) and anomaly and error detection (39%) (Gartner, 2024). In 2025 adoption held steady at 59%, with knowledge management (49%), accounts payable automation (37%) and error and anomaly detection (34%) the leading uses (Gartner, 2025).
Generative AI use is broadening. In a McKinsey survey of 102 CFOs, 44% said they used generative AI for more than five use cases in 2025, up from 7% the year before (McKinsey, 2025). And in Deloitte's survey of North American CFOs, 87% expect AI to be extremely or very important to finance operations in 2026 (Deloitte, 2026).
Five finance tasks to automate in an online retail business
1. Settlement reconciliation. Importing every marketplace payout, splitting it into sales, fees, refunds and reserves, and matching each line to an order. This is the foundation; see marketplace settlement reconciliation explained.
2. Fee and payment checks. Applying each channel's fee rules to each order and flagging differences. This is classic anomaly detection: thousands of normal transactions and a few that need a human.
3. Refund and dispute linking. Connecting refunds, chargebacks and marketplace claims to original orders, and checking that promised reimbursements arrive.
4. Coding and categorisation. Suggesting accounts for fees, ads and supplier invoices based on past treatment, with a person confirming.
5. Variance explanations and forecasts. Explaining why margin or cash moved this month. Finance leaders surveyed by Gartner rated explaining forecast and budget variances as the generative AI use case with the most immediate impact, chosen by 66% (Gartner, 2024). McKinsey describes a consumer goods company where a generative AI assistant for budget variance insights saved an estimated 30% of finance professionals' time (McKinsey, 2025).
Why people still need to approve
Accuracy matters more in finance than almost anywhere else. Gartner's analyst noted that finance work is mainly about numbers rather than language, so for the next few years generative AI is likely to act mostly as an interface to other, non-generative models that handle the calculations (Gartner, 2024). In practice, that means:
- deterministic matching and fee rules do the arithmetic;
- AI ranks, explains and drafts, for example "this payout is $412 short because three orders are missing";
- a person reviews exceptions and approves journals.
Human review also tackles the error problem rather than adding to it. Gartner found 18% of accountants make financial errors at least daily, linked to capacity pressure (Gartner, 2024). Automating the repetitive matching frees time for careful review of the items that matter.
Getting started without wasting money
Not every technology spend pays off. CPA Australia found only 30% of Australian small businesses said technology investment improved their profitability in 2025 (CPA Australia, 2026). McKinsey also notes that many AI pilots fail to deliver because they break down in real conditions or are poorly integrated into core processes (McKinsey, 2025). To avoid that:
- Fix the data first. Gartner found the top AI challenge for finance leaders was inadequate data quality and availability. For retailers, that means one order record per sale across all channels.
- Measure a baseline. Record hours per reconciliation cycle, errors corrected and money recovered before you start. Our guide to the cost of manual reconciliation shows how.
- Start with one channel. Automate the busiest marketplace, prove the result, then add others.
- Keep approvals and an audit trail. Every automated match and journal should be traceable to its source report.
Key figures
- 59% of finance functions used AI in 2025 (Gartner, 2025).
- 39% of finance functions using AI apply it to anomaly and error detection (Gartner, 2024).
- 44% of CFOs used generative AI for more than five use cases in 2025, up from 7% (McKinsey, 2025).
- 87% of CFOs expect AI to be extremely or very important to finance in 2026 (Deloitte, 2026).
How eComChannels helps
eComChannels Finance auto reconciliation applies automation where it is most reliable. It imports marketplace remittances and settlements, matches every line to orders in eComChannels order management, and checks each fee against the rules you set per marketplace and category. Instead of a spreadsheet of thousands of lines, your team sees a short list of exceptions: short or missing payments, unexpected fees, refunds without matching credits and reserves not yet released.
People stay in control. Your team reviews and approves before anything is posted, and every match traces back to the source report. That reduces hours spent on routine matching, recovers money that manual checks miss, and gives you reliable channel numbers sooner, so decisions on pricing, stock and ad spend are based on what each channel actually pays. FAQ
Can AI fully replace my bookkeeper?
No. Automation handles matching and checking at scale, but people still need to review exceptions, make judgement calls and take responsibility for the accounts and tax lodgements.
Is AI accurate enough for reconciliation?
Matching and fee checks work best with clear rules applied by software, with AI used to rank and explain exceptions. Keep human approval for anything posted to your ledger.
What do I need in place before automating finance?
Clean order data from every channel, a consistent chart of accounts, and a baseline of current hours and errors so you can measure the improvement.
