Product Descriptions vs Bullet Points: What Shoppers Read

Shoppers scan bullets and specs first and read long descriptions only when they need detail. How to split content between bullets, specs and descriptions.4 min read6 cited sourcesUpdated

Bullet points and descriptions do different jobs. Bullets (often called key features or key selling points) let shoppers scan the five or so facts that decide the purchase in seconds. The description gives depth for shoppers who need it: use cases, care, what is in the box and how the product compares with alternatives. Most listings need both, with the decision-critical facts in bullets and structured specs, and the long description supporting rather than repeating them.

Shoppers scan before they read

Online reading is mostly scanning. Nielsen Norman Group's analysis of web reading behaviour found users have time to read at most 28% of the words on an average page, and about 20% is more likely (Nielsen Norman Group, 2008). The research is older, but the lesson holds for marketplace listings: put decision-critical facts where scanners will see them.

Product pages follow the same pattern. Baymard Institute's usability research finds spec sheets immensely helpful to shoppers comparing products, yet its benchmark shows 50% of e-commerce sites have spec sheets that are difficult to scan (Baymard Institute, 2018). Its 2026 update rates 64% of sites' spec sheets as poor or mediocre (Baymard Institute, 2026). On a marketplace you do not control the layout, so the way you structure bullets and attributes is your main lever.

What marketplaces expect

Most marketplaces give you separate fields and expect them to be used differently:

  • Amazon recommends using all five bullet points, leading with the core value proposition, then covering material and build quality, fit and compatibility, what is included, care and usage. The description and A+ content support long-tail phrases and answer buying questions (Amazon, 2025).
  • Bunnings Marketplace (as documented by ChannelEngine) uses one to three key selling points shown as a bullet list, plus a product overview paragraph of at least 100 characters that must not repeat the key selling points.
  • eBay relies more heavily on item specifics for structured facts, with the description for detail and condition.
  • TikTok Shop, Temu and Kogan each have their own description fields and formatting rules.

Pasting one long description into every channel ignores these differences and usually buries the key facts.

What belongs in bullets

Bullets should answer the questions that stop a purchase. A useful test: if a shopper could not find this fact quickly, would they leave? Akeneo's 2025 survey found 38% of shoppers will abandon a site if they cannot easily find key features such as sizing and materials (Akeneo, 2025).

Good bullet content:

  1. The main benefit, stated concretely ("Keeps drinks cold for 24 hours").
  2. Size, capacity or fit, with units.
  3. Material and build.
  4. Compatibility or what it works with.
  5. What is included and any important limitation.

Write each bullet as a short label followed by a plain explanation. Keep one idea per bullet and avoid vague claims like "premium quality".

What belongs in the description

The description is where shoppers who are nearly convinced go to confirm. Use it for:

  • Use cases and scenarios ("ideal for school lunches and long drives").
  • Care and maintenance.
  • Comparisons between sizes or models in your range.
  • Warranty, certifications and compliance details, where accurate.
  • Long-tail search phrases, used naturally.

Keep paragraphs short and front-load each one. If the marketplace allows headings or line breaks, use them.

Don't forget structured specs

Dimensions, weight, wattage and materials belong in structured attributes as well as text. Marketplaces build spec tables and filters from those fields, and Baymard found 30% of sites have severe issues with inconsistent specs across products of the same type (Baymard Institute, 2026). Consistent attributes across a range make products easier to compare. See product attributes and data quality.

How eComChannels helps

eComChannels AI listing optimisation writes bullets, descriptions and structured attributes as separate pieces, built for each marketplace's fields. From your master product record, it drafts five Amazon bullets in the recommended order, one to three Bunnings key selling points with a non-repeating overview, eBay item specifics and channel-appropriate descriptions for Kogan, TikTok Shop, Temu and others, all within each channel's length and formatting rules. People review and approve before anything is published, and bulk updates keep every channel consistent when details change.

Visual content does part of the same job. AI graphics creates infographic images that repeat key features and dimensions for shoppers who look at photos before reading anything. Clear bullets, accurate specs and supporting images answer more questions on the listing, so fewer shoppers leave to look elsewhere.

FAQ

How long should a product description be?

Long enough to answer real buying questions, and no longer. Simple products may need a short paragraph; technical or high-value products benefit from more detail. Check each marketplace's minimums and maximums.

Should bullets and the description repeat the same information?

Avoid word-for-word repetition. Some marketplaces, such as Bunnings, explicitly ask that the overview not repeat key selling points. Expand on the bullets in the description instead.

Do bullet points help search ranking?

On many marketplaces bullet text is indexed for search, so secondary keywords placed naturally can help relevance. Their bigger effect is on conversion, which also feeds ranking.
