Shipping Bulky and Heavy Items in Australia: A Seller's Guide

How to ship furniture, flat-packs and other bulky goods in Australia: carrier limits, cubic weight, oversize surcharges, packaging and choosing a carrier.5 min read7 cited sourcesUpdated

Bulky and heavy items cost more to ship because carriers charge on size as well as weight, add surcharges once items exceed their standard handling limits, and often need two people or equipment at delivery. The way to keep costs and damage under control is to record accurate dimensions for every product, choose a carrier built for that freight profile, pack to the carrier's rules, and set customer expectations clearly at checkout.

Why bulky freight is different

Standard parcel networks are designed around items that can move through automated sorting machines and be carried by one person. Once an item is too long, too heavy or the wrong shape, it has to be handled manually, which is slower and more expensive.

Australia Post caps domestic parcels at 22kg, 105cm in length and 0.25 cubic metres. Beyond that, you need a freight service. StarTrack's published limits are 105 x 60 x 60cm and 22kg for Premium, and 117 x 60 x 60cm and 20kg for Road Express. Items outside those limits attract a $15 (excluding GST) Manual Handling Surcharge.

Understand oversize charges before you price

Oversize charges can wipe out the margin on a large item if you have not priced them in. StarTrack applies an oversize charge per item, in addition to service rates, for items with a dead weight over 32kg ($90) or any dimension from 150cm. Its published bands (excluding GST) are:

Longest dimensionCharge
150 to 199cm$25
200 to 299cm$45
300 to 399cm$85
400 to 499cm$250
500 to 599cm$450
600cm or over$600

CouriersPlease's freight profile shows a similar pattern: items between 1.05m and 1.8m attract an additional charge, and items longer than 1.8m, or with a cubic volume above 0.16 cubic metres (40kg), are listed as unacceptable.

These figures are list surcharges and can change, so check the latest rate schedules and your own contract. The point is that a few centimetres of packaging can move an item into a higher band.

Cubic weight decides what you pay

Carriers charge on the greater of dead weight and cubic weight. Australia Post multiplies length, width and height in metres by a conversion factor of 250kg per cubic metre. Its own example: a 50 x 30 x 40cm box is 0.06 cubic metres, or 15kg in cubic weight, even if the contents weigh far less.

For bulky goods, this means:

  • Measure the packed carton, not the product. Product dimensions on a spec sheet rarely match the shipping carton.
  • Store dimensions per SKU. Every multi-carton item (for example, a bed frame shipped in three boxes) needs dimensions and weight for each carton.
  • Review packaging. Grant Thornton and Power Retail's 2025 report notes that reducing empty space in packaging can cut delivery costs.

Pack and label to the carrier's rules

Australia Post's Peak Playbook 2026 gives clear StarTrack preparation rules: items over 16kg need a "Heavy" sticker with the exact weight recorded in the manifest and on the consignment label, and items over 32kg should be secured to a pallet or skid so they can be moved with load-shifting equipment.

Damage is a real cost for bulky goods. The Grant Thornton survey found damaged packaging on arrival would deter 29% of customers from shopping with that retailer again, and 26% of online returns were for items that were damaged, defective or incorrect. Strong cartons, corner protection and correct palletising reduce both returns and claims.

Choosing a carrier for bulky goods

  • Parcel networks (Australia Post, CouriersPlease) work for bulky-but-light items within their limits, but surcharges climb quickly.
  • StarTrack freight services suit heavy cartons and multi-carton consignments on a national network.
  • Allied Express handles everything from single consignments to multiple pallets interstate with a fleet of more than 1,000 vehicles.

Many retailers split their range: parcel carriers for accessories and smaller items, a freight carrier for furniture and large equipment. Our carrier comparison covers each option in more depth.

Set expectations with the customer

Bulky deliveries often take longer, may need someone home to sign, and may only go to the front door or kerb. Say so on the product page and at checkout. Show realistic delivery windows by region, explain whether delivery includes carrying inside, and offer to call ahead. Clear expectations prevent failed deliveries, which are expensive to reattempt for large freight.

How eComChannels helps

Bulky freight goes wrong when dimensions are missing or wrong, the wrong service is booked, or labels and manifests are typed by hand. AI auto shipping uses the weights and carton dimensions stored against each product to pick a suitable service across Australia Post, StarTrack, CouriersPlease and Allied Express under the rules you set, generates compliant labels and manifests for multi-carton consignments, and pushes tracking back to the marketplace or webstore where the order was placed. If an item arrives damaged, claims can be raised from the same record. Order management keeps orders from marketplaces such as Bunnings, Temple & Webster and Amazon in one queue, so large items are allocated and dispatched without being rekeyed. The result is fewer surprise surcharges, fewer manual errors and less time spent booking freight.

FAQ

What counts as a bulky item for Australian carriers?

It depends on the carrier, but items heavier than about 20 to 22kg, longer than about 105 to 117cm, or over 0.25 cubic metres usually fall outside standard parcel services and attract surcharges or need a freight service.

How do I avoid oversize surcharges?

Measure packed cartons accurately, reduce excess packaging, consider shipping long items in shorter cartons where the product allows, and choose a freight carrier whose standard limits fit your products.

Should I offer free shipping on bulky items?

Usually not as a blanket offer. Bulky delivery costs vary widely by item and destination, so many retailers charge by postcode zone or build delivery into the product price for nearby metro areas only.
